Southern Comforts: Surfin' USA

This is our beach guide to the south shore. There are three notable beaches in the area: Poipu Beach, Brennecke's Beach, and the lesser known Shipwreck Beach.

The Poipu Beach is by far the most famous of the three beaches and its reflected in the crowd that it pulls each day. It is a great place to snorkel and lay out and was designated as America's Best Beach by the Travel Channel. Located off of Poipu Road, take Hoowilli Road and park in the numerous parking spaces available. If you want to rent boogie boards, snorkeling gear, or any other water gear, you can visit the Nukumoi Surf Company on Hoone Road that is located directly across from the beach or you can grab your gear from Snorkel Bob's that is located in Koloa and Kapa'a.

Located on the eastern end of Poipu Beach on the eastern  is Brennecke's Beach. This spot is know for bodysurfers as the waves generated in this little cove can push you up onto the waves and make it feel like you are flying. Beware though, as the higher waves can crash down while you are riding them and can result in injury. When bodysurfing at Brennecke's Beach, always use the buddy system in case you get injured or need assistance in the water. Unlike Poipu Beach, Brennecke's does not have a lifeguard so you are in charge of your own safety.

Last but certainly not least is the overlooked gem located at the eastern point of the south shore known as Shipwreck Beach. Unlike the other beaches located in the South Shore, this beach is quiet and isolated from other beaches. It gets its name from the debris from passing cruise ships that wash up on its shores. While this may not be the beach for everyone, it has always been a favorite of mine for the sense of eerie quiet that you experience while sitting on the beach. I haven't been back to this beach in a couple of years and while I was researching driving directions to this beach, I noticed some significant changes (they paved the road to the beach which was half the fun) and it seems like there is a timeshare located near the beach. So unfortunately, I am not sure if the experience that I have had in years past can still be had but I do encourage you to check out this beach. To get to Shipwreck's Beach, travel east on Poipu Road and turn right on Ainako Street and park in the designated spots at the end of the road.
